As we sit here waiting impatiently for the 2019 college basketball season to begin, it remains difficult to ignore the talent that is still available in the 2020 class.
Every year, USA Today puts out a “Chosen 25” list of the top high school players in the upcoming class. While the opinions of recruiting experts and current rankings are considered, this list is really based on how the players are playing right now, but even more so how they project to the next level.
The Kentucky Wildcats currently have commitments from No. 4 Terrence Clarke and No. 14 BJ Boston. However, John Calipari remains in contention to land many other players on this list. The biggest fish of them all is No. 1 Cade Cunningham, and Kentucky is putting a lot of energy into potentially getting him to Lexington.
USA Today lists the 6-5 Cunningham as a point forward and wrote that “Cunningham is a workhorse of a forward, whose versatility and toughness translate into dominance on the court.”
Although Cunningham seems to be separating himself from the pack, Kentucky is also still an option for No. 7 Greg Brown, No. 8 Isaiah Todd, No. 21 Daishen Nix, and No. 22 Isaiah Jackson. Everyone on that list is either a big man or a point guard (or forward), and that is not surprising considering the potential for returning players from this year’s roster and the talent that Clarke and Boston bring to the table.
If Kentucky was able to land two of these players, especially if one of them is Cunningham, then this has the potential to be the best class that Calipari has ever brought to Kentucky. Will he be able to land a superclass in 2020?
Not many of these guys look ready to make a decision soon, so we should probably focus on enjoying the 2019-2020 season while we wait for the rest of the 2020 recruiting class to fall into place.
