WBON-TV went to the Estill County Health Department to learn more about their new needle exchange program and how it helps prevent the spread of diseases.
Health Department official, Mandy Watson, worked with department administrator and supervisors to introduce the program. According to Watson, Estill County did not have a needle exchange program prior to this.
Watson goes on to explain that nobody will be turned away from the program, and that measures have been taken to ensure confidentiality for anyone seeking to exchange syringes.
“Nobody will ever get called by a name anymore, just because we want to keep all of this completely anonymous”, Watson states.
The program is just one step being taken to help combat the high numbers of confirmed Hepatitis A cases within the area.
The program takes place every Monday at the health department during normal business hours.
