Former Madison Southern stand out and Alabama player Damien Harris signed with the New England Patriots this week to a 4 year deal worth more than $3.6 million dollars that includes a signing bonus worth $888,319. The Former Crimson Tide running back ran for 876 yards as senior averaging 5.9 yards a carry and scored 9 touchdowns. He also caught 22 passes for an additional 204 yards.
Harris was at Gilette Stadium Tuesday for the start of mandatory mini camp for the Patriots. Patriots Director of Personnel Nick Ceserio commented on the drafting of Harris in the third of the NFL Draft as a surprise. New England had Damien ranked high on their scouting board and was pleasantly surprised when he fell to the Patriots at the number 87. Many experts have Harris as one of the steals of the 2019 Draft.
Harris had this to say after mini camp Tuesday,
“I just came out here with the mindset to get better and improve; learn from my mistakes last week and the day before. So I just want to come out here and get better, work on things I need to improve on and continue to improve on the things that maybe I’m decent at, so that’s just my mindset coming out here to be the best player I can be.”
He also added that he’s willing to do anything the Patriots need him to do, “I mean, you can work on anything at this point. That’s our objective: get better at all phases of the game. I know that’s my objective. Come out here and be the best player I can be, whether it’s in the run game, the pass game, special teams. Whatever I’m asked to do, I’m going to be able to come out here and do it at a high level.”
