After many years of service to the Southern Madison County community, Berea K-9 unit Parko will be retiring from his duties.
According to his handler, Officer Jeff Harness at the Berea Police Department, the two have worked together and bonded during both their training and off-duty time. The now 9-year-old pup will stay with Harness because of their immense bond together, but will retire from his official duties with the police force effective in June.
WBON-tv spoke with the pair, and Harness explained why the decision was made to retire the canine.
Harness also shared during the interview some memories that stick out since he has trained his partner, as well as some tracking Parko has accomplished along with drug busts, most recently methamphetamine seizures credited to Parko’s keen drug-sniffing senses.
Parko, who is trained to respond to commands in German, will stay with Harness and a new police dog will be acquired from the same school Parko came from.
