Eastern Kentucky basketball got their biggest recruit in the AW Hamilton era this morning when Scott County star Michael Moreno chose the Colonels over Wofford University and Evansville. Moreno led the Cardinals to three state tournament appearances including a pair of state runner-up finishes the past two seasons.
When it came time to pick a school to play for Moreno went with a familiar name to play for. EKU Head Coach AW Hamilton is Scott County native and like Micheal he helped the Cardinals advance to the State Tournament and win it in 1998. One of the first things Hamilton did after being named head coach was to call Moreno. Moreno said during his announcement that, “When he (Coach Hamilton) walked into my house for his final in-home visit, he didn’t start with basketball. He just started talking about Keeneland and the weekend with the Derby, school and stuff like that. It shows me that he’s never really cared about me just as a basketball player. It’s about an individual and a person.” Another reason he’s excited to play for Hamilton, “He knows what it’s like to be from Georgetown and make it out.”
Moreno was rated a 3 star recruit and a top 250 recruit by 247 Sports. He received only offer from a major Conference in the form of Iowa but he ultimately chose the only local school to offer in the Colonels. Moreno has played at Alumni Coliseum quite a bit in his career as the 11th region tournament is hosted in Richmond yearly. He helped lead the Cardinals to three straight regional championships at Alumni.
Unfortunately during his senior season he 18 consecutive games due to a foot fracture but still managed to score nearly 2500 career points in high school (2408). The injury took Moreno out of contention for the prestigious Mr. basketball award. In his final game as a Cardinal in the KHSAA championship game he scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
