The Lexington Legends look to defend their SAL League Championship this year as they begin the season with an almost complete new roster. Legends finished last year 76-60 and won the team’s second championship by defeating Lakewood Blueclaws in a best of five series three games to one.
This year’s team is going to look different from last seasons and it begins at the top with a new manager in Brooks Conrad. Conrad replaces Scott Thurman who was manager for two seasons in Lexington. Conrad is the first former Lexington Legend to return and manage the team. He played 38 games for the Legends back in 2003.
Legends return five players from last year’s team and they welcome catcher Chase Vallot back. Vallot played for Lexington in 2015 and part of 2016. Joining Chase will be 14 draft picks from the 2018 draft. The Legends bring a wealth of talent to the field this season. They have four players ranked in the top 30 prospects in the Kansas City Royals organization. Kris Bubic, a left handed pitcher, is ranked 9th in the organization. Bubic was drafted in the 1st round of the supplemental draft. outfielder Michael Gigliotti returns and is ranked as the 13th best prospect. Gigliotti only played in 6 games last year due to injury. Austin Cox, another left handed pitcher, is ranked 22nd in the organization. He is a 2nd round draft pick last year for the Royals. Jeison Guzman, a shortstop, ranks as the 24th best prospect for the Royals. Guzman played in 60 for the Legends last season. He hit .239 and knocked in 27 runs while scoring 21 runs.
One player who is new to the team but not Lexington is Zach Haake. Haake pitched for the University of Kentucky last season. He appeared in 18 games for UK striking out 36 hitters in 34 innings. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2018 Draft and played for AZL Royals before getting promoted to Rookie Level Idaho Falls. He went 15 innings with a 1.76 ERA and struck out 14 hitters at Idaho Falls.
