Even though the munitions at the Bluegrass Army Depot are in the process of being dismantled, local schools have to be prepared in case of an emergency. The Berea Community Schools held their shelter in place drill to prepare students.
All doors and windows in the school were sealed shut and HVAC systems were shut down. The elementary, middle, and high school students were moved to the gymnasium as they prepared for evacuation. In a real emergency, the students would be bused to the North Laurel High School.
Community Elementary School principal Paula Johnson said that the teachers share responsibility for making sure that students are accounted for. She said that all went according to plan and that she is proud of her students and staff.
