The Berea Lady Pirates returned to All A tournament for the first time since 2000 when they advanced to the Quarterfinals. This is the schools fourth trip to the big dance. Berea gets to Alumni Coliseum by defeating Model and Frankfort. Lady Pirates enter with a record of 18-4 and winners of four of the past five. The opening round opponent is a team that is the Pirates know having defeated Wolfe County 48-47 back on December 27th in the Berea Holiday Tournament. Wolfe County enters the game on a six game winning streak and an overall record of 16-4.
The game started with a three pointer from Allison Stamper of Wolfe County but Berea answers with a 5-0 spurt all from Adrienne Beggs to go ahead. Wolfe County ties it at 5 but it was all Pirates after that Beggs with 8 points in the opening quarter and the defense from Berea holds Wolfe without a point for the final 2:13 and it’s 12-5 after one quarter. The Lady Wolves get within three points a couple of times but could get no closer. Berea forces 10 turnovers and out rebound Wolfe 20-8. Lady Pirates with 20 second chance points as well and they lead 26-19 at the break. Adrienne Beggs with 15 points and 8 rebounds to pace the 11th region winners.
Berea extends their lead to 30-19 to start the second half but Wolfe County starts their comeback going on an 8-0 to get within three at 30-27. A timeout by Coach Stepp and then Mati Stepp banks in a three pointer and Beggs with a basket to end the third put the Pirates up 9 entering the fourth quarter. The Lady Wolves would not get closer than 7 points the rest of the way and Berea advances to the quarterfinals of the All A Classic to play Friday at 1.
For Berea Beggs with 27 points and 17 rebounds along with 4 steals and a pair of blocks. Mati Stepp with 8 points and 3 assists, Chesney Lovins 4 points, Madison Howell and Alexis Newman add 3 points each and Melissa Gosney with 2 points.
