The Colonels returned home 0-4 in OVC play and they knew they couldn’t go 0-5 and fall farther behind in league play. Their opponent Tennessee Martin also was in search of a win losing their first four in league play. The Skyhawks carried a three game winning streak here in Richmond into the contest. Coach Hamilton expressed earlier in the week that he would like to get some offense generated through his defense.
EKU opened the game on a 6-0 run with a three pointer DuJuanta Weaver and an old fashioned three point play from Kelvin Robinson. At the 14:45 mark Martin took a 9-8 lead but that would be short lived. A 13-0 run put the Colonels ahead 29-17, Jomaru Brown scored seven straight points during the run. Preston Hewitt with a three pointer for the Skyhawks but EKU goes on a 19-0 which turns into a 40-9 run to pull ahead 48-20. Skyhawks with a 10-6 run but a three as the first half buzzer expired from Lachlan Anderson gave EKU a 55-30 lead at the half. Colonels force 14 turnovers while they only commit 5 as a team. Colonels score 18 points off those turnovers. Brown with 12 points off the bench to lead the scoring. Nick Mayo with 8 points at half, he needs 8 more to have 2000 points in his career.
Second half started with a three pointer from Weaver and the Skyhawks go on a little run to get within twenty four points but that was as close as they would get. Colonels knock down fourteen three pointers including six from Weaver which set a new career high for him. Colonels were able to play the entire bench with ten different players scoring. Colonels win 97-73. Four Colonels in double figures led by Weaver and his 18 points, he also adds 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 assists. Houston King with 16 points, Brown has 14 points along with 5 steals. Nick Mayo with 13 points, 3 short of reaching 2000 for his career, and adds 6 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 3 steals. Tre King with 8 points and 9 rebounds, Kelvin Robinson 8 points, Jordan Oakley 7 points, Cameron Carmical adds 6 and Lachlan Anderson 5. EKU improves to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in the league play. They return to action Saturday night at home against Southeast Missouri.
