Madison Southern and Lafayette met in a region clash Thursday afternoon at Madison Central. After one quarter of play at the Jack Burford Classic neither coach was happy with their team’s performance. Both teams combined for 19 turnovers, 13 of those by the Lady Eagles. Lafayette led 12-11 after one quarter of play. The second quarter saw both teams take better care of the ball but for the Lady Eagles they couldn’t find the bottom of the basket shooting 2-11 from the field and 1-6 at the free throw line. Lafayette didn’t fare much better going 4-16 from the field. The first half saw 2 lead changes and 3 ties.
The second half saw Lafayette extend it’s 6 point halftime lead into 12 by the end of the quarter. Lindi DeBilzan had 8 points in the 3rd for Lafayette, Sunni Walter tried to match her point for point scoring 6 for the Eagles. Down 12 Madison Southern got to within 8 points with 4:32 left in the game but that would be as close as they could get. Lafayette wins the game going away 63-42. Southern ends the game with 25 turnovers resulting in 19 Lafayette points. The Generals knock down 21-32 of their free throw attempts while Southern only attempted 18 making 10 of those. The duo of DeBilzan 27 points and Macey Goff 25 points and 15 rebounds were too much to overcome.
For Madison Southern Samantha Cornelison led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sunni Walters added 10 points and 6 rebounds and a pair of steals. Skylar Sparks 6 points and 6 rebounds and a team high 3 assists. Zaria Carter with 2 points and 6 rebounds, Reece Estep 2 points, Anna King 2 points, and Maci Daniels 2 points.
Madison Southern returns to action Friday night at the Jack Burford Classic at 7:00
