The Lady Colonels opened the season at home in a noon tip-off versus a team that saw postseason play last year. The Billikens of Saint Louis made the trip to Richmond for their season opener as well. The Colonels return 4 starters from last year’s team and will also have 5 new players to work in the lineup. This is Head Coach Chrissy Roberts 12th season at the helm. This afternoon her team comes in a little shorthanded with senior Madison Pierce and transfer Catie Kaifes out for the game. Lady Colonels do have Abby Wright (14 ppg) and Bria Bass (11 ppg) returning this season.
The season started with an Abby Wright three pointer and some great defense with the team taking a pair of charges early in the game. The game saw 5 lead changes in the opening quarter but 10-2 by Saint Louis to end the frame saw the Billikens up 23-17 after one. Colonels were 3-4 behind the arc in the quarter and shot 50% overall but that was not going to last. The second quarter saw the home team shoot 4-12 from the floor and get in some major foul trouble as Brittany Grice had 4 fouls at the half, and 4 other Colonels each had 2. Abby Wright had 2 fouls after a quarter and did not play in the 2nd quarter. Billikens use a pair of runs, 12-2 run to end the 1st quarter and open the 2nd and an 8-0 run to end the half to push out to a 39-26 halftime lead. Wright, Terri Goodlett, and freshman Hailey McCoy led the scoring with 5 points each. Colonels end the half shooting 10-24 from the field and 2-5 from the free throw line. Saint Louis shoots 13-24 from the floor and knock down 11-15 from the charity stripe.
Second half began with the Lady Colonels cutting the deficit down to 12 at 44-32 with 6:20 left in the 3rd but that would be the final points they would score as they go 2-13 from the floor and see St. Louis go 8-14 from the field and outscore the Colonels 19-6 in the frame. Lady Colonels just couldn’t the ball to fall this afternoon and Saint Louis wins the opener 70-43. Saint Louis outscores the Colonels 42-14 in the paint and that was the difference in the contest along with the cold shooting 16-53 30.2% and 5-15 from the free throw line.
Abby Wright leads the team in scoring with 8 points, grabs 5 rebounds, and dishes out 3 assists. Freshman Mashayla Cecil from Lexington Dunbar High School with 7 points in her college debut along with a pair of rebounds. She does not turn it over in 24 minutes of play.
