The AW Hamilton Era Begins With A Win

When AW Hamilton accepted the Eastern Kentucky Head Coaching job he promised that his team would score a lot of points and play hard on offense and defense. In the only exhibition of the preseason the Colonels shot the three ball well and got on the floor for loose balls and were active on defense. Colonels had 62 deflections in the game.

The game started with the Colonel crowd standing until the EKU scored, when asked who suggested that coach Hamilton quickly credited the cheerleading coach and the cheerleaders. All American Nick Mayo picked up two quick fouls and less than two minutes in the game he was on the bench. When asked about that in the post game press conference he said ” I think it gave us a chance to play without Nick, it gave some other guys an opportunity to step up.” One of those guys was Lachlan Anderson. The junior saw from Australia played 21 minutes and scored 26 points. Last season in 13 games he scored 18 points. Tonight he shot 8-11 from the field and was a perfect 5-5 behind the arc. He also added a team high 16 rebounds.

In the first minute of the game Colonels force the Knights into 3 turnovers. Kentucky Christian had 14 turnovers at the half but were shooting the ball well going 19-35 from the field including knocking down 6 three’s. Fortunately for Eastern they shot 22-47 and knocked down 9 treys and led 62-50 at the half. Anderson had 14 points along with Dujuanta Weaver. Colonels hit the offensive glass hard in the opening half getting 12 offensive boards. KCU only had 18 rebounds total at half.

The second half saw both teams play fairly even but midway through the half Colonels start pulling away. EKU goes on to score an astounding 136 points in the win but surrender 92. Coach Hamilton said he was excited to see the game film and use it as a teaching tool during the upcoming week. Colonels did a lot right on defense, forcing 26 turnovers in the game, but they also allowed a lot of easy baskets to the Knights. Hamilton said that is defiantly something that has to be addressed ahead of the regular season opener against Marshall. Colonels end up with 86 shots which Coach Hamilton was pleased with, Kentucky Christians only had 67 shots.

Nick Mayo only plays 13 minutes tonight and he scores 10 points but he was nice to see the Colonels play well without him in the lineup. Anderson led the Colonels in points and rebounds but 8 Colonels score in double figures tonight. Weaver ends with 17 points, Jordan Oakley 16 points and 8 rebounds, Peyton Broughton 14 points, Kelvin Robinson has 16 points 6 rebounds and 6 assists. The freshman trio of Jomaru Brown has 16 points, Tre King with 9 points and 6 rebounds, Houston King 10 points in 12 minutes played well in their home and collegiate openers. Cameron Carmical adds 2 points. Colonels shoot 56% for the game from the field, 15-33 on three pointers, and 25-42 on free throws.

Things get real next Wednesday when Marshall comes to town, it will be the first time a nationally ranked team will visit Alumni since Auburn came to Richmond in 1986. EKU will be doing a lot of promotions for the contest but this is one of the biggest games at Eastern in school history. The game will start at 7 Pm on Wednesday November 7th and can be heard on 100.7 Fm the Coyote the flagship station of Colonels athletics.
