Election 2018 Two Minute Sitdowns: KY House Representative District 71 Candidate Mary J. Renfro

Current Madison County School Board member Mary Renfro says things have been going well on the school board, so she was ready to take a bigger step and run for another office.

Renfro is running for State Representative for Madison, Garrard, and Rockcastle counties, District 71 on the Democrat ticket.

She came to visit for a Two Minute Sitdown and says that although there are many exciting things that she has seen during her time on the school board, such as the new Boonesborough Elementary and the new offices near Lake Reba that she is ready to take on a new challenge.

With her background knowing the education system, Renfro says that this is obviously one of her priorities. Renfro says if she is elected to represent District 71 she would go to Frankfort to fight for teacher’s pensions, and to ensure that there would be as little cuts to education as possible.

Renfro also mentioned the crucial role of trade schools, as although she graduated from Eastern Kentucky University herself, she agrees that college isn’t neccessarily for everyone.

We also discussed the looming drug epidemic, and Renfro says she and her husband care for the kids in addiction situations, as they have adopted 3 and are working on 4 children from drug addicted homes.

Renfro says that is it not easy to find solutions to the epidemic, but for her the children are of utmost importance in these situations.
