Madison Southern (1-5) didn’t have the start to the season they were looking for. District play begins Friday night and as far as the playoffs are concerned every team is 0-0. It doesn’t matter if you went 1-5 or 5-1 in the first half of the season, come playoff time you are seeded by how you play in district games. The Eagles are a perfect 9-0 in district play since the formation of the district in 2015.
2015, let’s remember back to that year. The Eagles were 1-4 entering district play. They were coming off a loss to Pulaski County and everyone was expecting Anderson County or Montgomery County to win the district. Fast forward to 2018, Southern is 1-5 and coming off a loss to Pulaski County, Anderson County and Montgomery County are once again the favorites to win district. Will history repeat itself, if you’ve watched this Madison Southern team play you know they are better than the record shows. They’ve played some tough opponents, five ranked at the time of the game and a 23 wins among them. That’s not an excuse just shows the quality of the schedule as they prepare for district.
Montgomery enters the game with a 5-1 record and are led by Justin Korossy with 695 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. The rushing attack from the Indians is the 4th best in class 5A. Along side Korossy, Josh Wheaton has 471 yards and 6 TDS on the ground. Quarterback Trey Ishmael has thrown for 492 yards and 6 scores this season. In the regular season games last year versus the Eagles he only threw one pass. He has a dangerous threat in Pharoah Davis who has caught 19 balls for 360 yards and 5 TDs.
The Eagles enter the game still looking to establish themselves offensively. Quarterback Tobias Storm has thrown for 492 yards through the air and he leads the team in rushing with 532 yards. Storm is the 13th leading rusher in 5A with 89 yards a game. Alex Knuckles has 335 yards and 5 TDs on the ground and Isiah Buttry has scored 5 times as well. In the past two games the Eagles have found a gem in freshman AJ Jones. Jones has 108 yards rushing and 2 scores since joining the varsity team. While the passing numbers for Strom don’t look impressive he does have some strong targets when he passes. Clay Tinsley leads the team with 10 catches for 145 yards and Zeke Benton has caught 8 ball for 158 yards. Tight end Seth Shepard has caught 5 passes for 69 yards and Jordan Casteel has 6 receptions. Defensively Madison Southern is led Knuckles and Clay Bunch who have 42 tackles each. Zeke Benton has 40 tackles and TJ Estes has 29 tackles with three of those going for a loss. Joseph Hill, in his first season as an Eagle, has 5 sacks on the year after getting to the Pulaski County QB 3 times last game out.
These teams are no strangers to one another and this is the last year of the district like it is, next season the districts are realigned. With Madison Southern being undefeated in district play since the inception the other three teams smell blood in the water. Will history repeat itself like it did in 2015? Only one way to find out and that is to come to the stadium and cheer the Eagles to victory.
