Colonels Win First Game In Costa Rica

The Colonels opened play tonight against the Laurentian Vouyageurs. The team was able to get out and enjoy the sights before getting to business and once the game began, the Colonels were all business.

Head Coach AW Hamilton starters for the first games were sophomore Jacquess Hobbs (#1), Junior Jordan Oakley (#2), Sophomore Peyton Broughton (#3), Senior Nick Mayo (#10), and true freshman Jomaru Brown (#11). I added uniform numbers for reference if you attended the open practices. The game got started with Mayo scoring the first five points, he started the game going a perfect 3/3 including a three pointer. The game was played under international rules so instead of two halves they played four quarters. After quarter number one game was tied at 25. Close game through the first half With EKU up two at halftime 44-42. At halftime Nick Mayo had 14 points and 7 rebounds. Redshirt freshman Pedro Bradshaw had 10 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. Colonels shot 19/42 in the opening half and had 6 turnovers.

Second half stayed close for a while but the Colonels ran off a 29-17 third quarter and led 73-59 going to the final quarter. EKU would be out scored 24-20 in the fourth but would win the game 93-83. A great start for Eastern Kentucky, everyone who could got some playing time and even while on the bench the players were fired up and cheering on their teammates.

Final stats, Colonels end up shooting 40-78 from the field (51%), 5-16 from behind the three point line and 8-18 from the free throw line. If you want to find something bad from the game the free throw shooting can be better. You have to believe the coaches will have them working on that in practice. Colonels force sixteen turnovers on defense. Colonels get 28 points off those turnovers and scores 58 points in the paint. As for the individual statistics, Nick Mayo had 22 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked a pair of shots. Jordan Oakley Tied with Mayo for the Colonel lead in points with 22 and he barely missed a double double with 9 rebounds. Oakley also had two steals and two blocked shots. Pedro Bradshaw had a big game off the bench scoring 22 and grabbing 11 rebounds. Peyton Broughton had 9 points and added a couple of steals, junior Lachlan Anderson with 8 points and 3 rebounds. Jacquess Hobbs with 4 points and 4 rebounds, and sophomore Cameron Carmical with 3 points.
