Estill County softball returns to the Owensboro Health/KHSAA State Softball Tournament for the first time since 2016. This is a trip that the Lady Engineers are used to making since joining the fourteenth region. This year’s team enters with a 20-12 record. after rolling through the 56th district and regional play.
Senior Kaylee Covey led the way on the mound this season pitching every game with an ERA under three runs. She struck out 247 batters while only walking thirty five. She was seventh in strikeouts and seventh in wins in the state this season. Lindsay Wood, a senior infielder, led the team in batting at .520. She led the team in hits with fifty one and scored forty seven runs. The forty seven runs were good for 23rd best in the state. She also led the team in stolen bases with thirty one, fourteenth best in the state. Sarah Wiseman, senior catcher, second on the team in batting at .424. She led the team in RBI with forty two. Sophomore Kaylee Riddell led the team in Home Runs with seven on the year. As a team Estill County hit .330.
They will face the region twelve champions Boyle County who will be making their second straight trip to Owensboro. They enter the game with a 26-10 record. They played at Estill earlier this season back on May 8th winning 11-0. They enter winners of nine in a row. The Rebels have two quality pitchers, Senior Kelly Lay and Junior Katy Grace Chadwell. Lay is 13-1 on the year with a 2.33 ERA. Chadwell has a 2.11 ERA. As a staff the team ERA is only 2.19. Kelley Bowling is tenth in state in the home runs with twelve. As a team Boyle County is hitting .325.
The softball tournament is double elimination giving a team a chance to rebound after a loss. This will be the final season of the double elimination format. Estill County and Boyle County play tonight at 7 PM. The winner will play at Friday morning at 9 AM while the loser will play at a time to be announced. Stay with WBONTVSPORTS twitter for updates
