Madison Southern traveled to Richmond to play district rival Madison Central. This is the first match-up since the Eagles upset the Indians in the opening round of last year’s 44th district tournament. The Indians enter the game ranked in the ten in the state with a 9-1 record. Madison Southern, after dropping three straight to start the season has reeled off six consecutive victories including an impressive win over Henry Clay. They lost their three games by a combined five runs.
The Indians ran Lucas Myers out to start the game. The lefty started the game by walking Michael Atkinson and the next hitter, Michael Bannister tripled home Atkinson to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Another a walk to Dalton Gregory the Eagles a chance to add to the lead but they weren’t able to get anything across. Hunter Buchanan toed the hill for Madison Southern. Buchanan ran into trouble early as lead off hitter Jacob Ferris, Trey Eden, and Ben Snapp all singled to start the first. Buchanan was able to pick off a runner but shortstop Logan Thomason, an EKU commit, put a ride into a fastball over the 360 foot wall in right center to put the Indians on top 3-1 after an inning. Indians were able to add three runs in the third and fourth inning to run starter Buchanan out of the game. Dalton Gregory came in to pitch from first base and was able to get out the jam he inherited. After four complete Indians were up 9-1. Fifth inning saw Madison Southern make a comeback getting a couple of runs off of Myers. Cameron Travis came in relief of Myers and was able to leave the bases loaded. The inning ended on a bang bang play that Southern Head Coach Gene Combs thought pulled the first baseman off the bag. He argued but was unsuccessful. Kennan Naugle came in and pitched a perfect seventh inning to secure the victory for Madison Central 10-3.
For the Indians Jacob Ferris was 2-4 and scored two runs, Trey Eden was a perfect 3-3 with a single, double, and triple. He knocked in three runs and scored three as well, Ben Snapp went 2-2 with four RBI and a two run homer, Logan Thomason with a two run homer. Lucas Meyer with the win going four and a third allowing four hits, three runs, walking six, and striking out two. For Madison Southern Michael Atkinson was 0-2 but did walk twice scoring two runs and stealing two bases. Michael Bannister with an RBI triple, Britton Robinson was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Dalton Gregory 1-2 with two walks at the plate and went two and two thirds on the mound allowing one hit, one run, walking two and striking out two. Clay Combs added an RBI double.
Madison Central returns to action this weekend in Harrison County where they will play three games. Next home game is Tuesday against top ten team Lafayette. For Madison Southern they return home Friday night against Franklin County.
