Strong second half propels Lexington Christian over Madison Central

Madison Central (25-8) coming off a marathon triple overtime victory over Bryan Station faced a team as hot as they are in Lexington Christian (27-7) in the semi-finals of the 11th region tournament Saturday afternoon. LCA, the 2017 All A champions advanced after a win over Frankfort. This was a rematch of last year’s 11th region opening round in which the Indians won by a point.
The game started with the Indians getting on the board first with an offensive rebound put back by senior Dustin Gerald. Kenyon McKee with a three makes it 5-0 but Christian gets a three of their own from Kyle Rode. Indians make a couple of three’s in the opening quarter and lead 12-5 after one. The zone from Madison Central holds Lexington Christian to 2-13 from the field and 1-8 from three pointers.
Second quarter McKee hits his second three pointer two seconds in and Indians out to a ten point advantage. Central runs out to a 21-8 lead before Austin Hall gets a lay up and for Christian, making it 11 point lead. Back and forth but as the half ends Isiah Minter knocks down a long jumper as the buzzer sounds and at halftime it’s Madison Central on top 25-15. The Indian’s defense held LCA to 6-24 from the field and they only connect on 2-13 three’s in the half. Gerald, McKee, and Isiah Cozart all with 6 points for Central with Coazrt having 11 rebounds and 3 blocks at half.
Second half begins with Duston Gerald hitting the floor hard with no foul being called, head Coach Allen Feldhaus recieved a bench warning from the officials but the Eagles of LCA run off six straight points to get within four until Jacori Miller with a layup to break the mini run. With 2:15 left in the third LCA ties the game at 29, outscoring the Indians 21-9 in the third they take a two point lead into the final quarter at 36-34. Eagles knock down four three pointers and hold Indians to 4-13 from the floor in the quarter, Kyle Rode with 13 in the period. Fourth quarter Miller hits a three to put his team back on top 37-36 but 20 seconds later a three from LCA puts them back on top. With 7:08 left Gerald with a jumper ties the game at 39 but a 12-5 run put the game at 51-44 with 2 minutes left. With 1:09 left Central got as close as four after a couple of fouls shots from Minter making it 51-47. Carter Hendrickson with a basket and the free throw to make it 54-7 with only :37 seconds left, Lexington Christian would make their free throws and hold off Madison Central’s rally to win 58-52.
The third quarter of LCA was just too much for Central to overcome as their season will end in the final four of the region. For Madison Central Isiah Minter finished with 14 points, Dustin Gerald with 13, Cozart with 11 points and 14 rebounds, Jacori Miller adds 8, and Kenyon McKee with 6. For LCA Kyle Rode hits nine three pointers and led all scorers with 22.
The Eagles will now play Scott County Monday night for an opportunity to advance to Rupp Arena and the Sweet Sixteen. WBONTV will be in Perry County with the Estill County Engineers as they play in the semi-finals, check for game time of that one.
