Update and Expansion to Madison County Syringe Exchange Program

It has been five months since the SEP program began with the Madison County Health Department. According to Public Information Officer of the Health Department Jim Thacker, it is growing slowly as is the trend for such programs.
However, he remarked that they have already had some successes with seeing patients stop returning to get fresh needles in order to seek treatment or wean themselves off drugs themselves.

Deacon of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church Andre Patterson said that the church decided as a whole to accept the needle exchange twice a month on Tuesdays at their location on Elm Street. The goal is to make the needle exchange more accessible to users, some who may not be able to make it to the Boggs Lane location in Richmond as well as in Berea as it has been since the program’s inception.
