Yesterday, Saint Joseph Berea Hospital was presented with a check for over $1.1 million dollars from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Catholic Health Initiatives. The money, from the Mission & Ministry Fund, will go towards ‘bridging the gap’ in the Berea community. The grant is part of a $5 million total sum that was awarded country-wide by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, other pieces of which were given to KentuckyOne Health Pediatric Associates and KentuckyOne Health Primary Care Associates in London.
Director of Operations for the hospital Scott Thompson sat down with WBON-TV to talk about the great honor of receiving this large sum, and what the money will go towards to help community members who have unmet basic human needs.
Thompson says that three Community Health Workers will be hired with a portion of the funds, to better connect patients with community resources such as housing, behavioral health, and childcare assistance as well as food insecurity.
